Vancouver Island - 2008

I've been to Vancouver Island twice now, and while the first time was just Victoria, the second had us staying near Nanoose Bay, and driving up and down the island. These are mostly photogrpahs of our March 2008 outing.

Restricted Access indeed

This was the sign on a door on one of the ferries to Vancouver Island. A good thing they warned me, too: that room would have killed me...

Smile like a donut

I would love to shake the hand of whoever had the idea of writing down the small additional. It makes one smile.

View over the inlet

This was the view over the inlet from the Pacific Shores resort. It's close to Nanoose Bay (their address claims it in fact is) but really it's a small unnamed inlet connecting to the straight of Georgia. Pretty though.

Must be Canadia

You know you're in Canada when... Canadian geese.

double shadow

Almost the same as www.flickr.com/photos/pomax/2853581721/ and www.flickr.com/photos/pomax/2853578023/ ... with a crucial addition!

Danger!

I just found this very funny. This was in a nice looking resort near Nanoose Bay... nothing drives "danger" home like a box with a warning, and the same warning again in negative colours!

A broken parrot

We went to the World Parrot Refuge (http://worldparrotrefuge.org/), which has over 700 abandoned or neglected parrots... I already knew what parrots do to themselves without a pack and neglecting owners, but every time you see it, it sends shivers down your spine. Parrots don't have nails to bite, or pencils to chew on. When they start to stress out, they start to pluck on the only thing they have at hand. Themselves. And to death, if not caught in time.

Hello

Why is it that everyone has red-eared slider turtles? It's not not even tropical, it's from the southern part of North America...

Flutterby~

Seriously, we need to renomise the word "butterfly" because it just doesn't work. Just call it a flutterby, at least then it's no longer a misnomer. WHAT BUTTER?

A caged turtle...

We, rather contrary to expectation, found this land turtle at Butterfly World, Vancouver Island (http://www.nature-world.com). It seemed content, but not beyond at least overlooking the realms unreachable.

A closeup of a land turtle shell

I just love detail.

Orchid

I duly apologise: I did not take a picture of the name tag. I have no idea why. Even today, I often forget. Anyway, the Butterfly World, Vancouver Island, had an orchid garden too. Voila, orchid.

More Orchid

The Butterfly World, Vancouver Island, had an orchid garden too. Voila, more orchid.

Red eared, front and centre

Close up shots make Pomax smile.

A rusty weather vane

Whoever made this probably didn't have it mentalised as a rusty edition of what probably was pristine at some point. I like this version.

An egret

Butterfly World, Vancouver Island, had this in their outdoor section... I rather liked this bit of artwork. Egrets. Do go on.
