The Lick Observatory

The Lick Observatory, founded and funded by James Lick is an amazing thing, and getting there is a journey that starts in comfort and ends in abject terror, until you park.

Driving up to the Lick Observatory

This looks pretty good right? The road went from two lane perfectly safe guard-railed to the markings becoming painted on, then disappearing because the road had crumbled away on the sides. The side our right wheels were on, mind you. With an edge you couldn't see when you looked down through the passenger window.

Driving up to the Lick Observatory

Still, the first few miles were very lovely.

The view down below

Cityscape is a little disappointing when it could be just nature instead. Just saying.

There it is!

We were about half-way through the trip up and could see the observatory! We were also starting to fear for our lives.

The 36" refractory telescope

this telescope is a small marvel of engineering.

Lick's tomb

James Lick is probably the biggest scientific philanthropist you probably never heard of

The Lick Observatory

A little distorted due to panorama shooting, unfortunately. Still, worth going, go there =)

That's the road up

Well... part of it.

The road up, as panorama

It's quite a drive. It scared the hell out of us, and we won't do it again in the care we rented (small european sports car? yes), but it was very impressive.

This road is properly freaking scary

That sign does not help. Also that's not "comfy green hill just next to the side". That's a 400 foot drop. Then a hill 400 feet back up.

Rolling hillsides

I will say this: it's a very pretty drive. When you're not looking over a sheer cliff.

Biking down

I would love to do this trip on a bike. It would be hell going up, but so enjoyable to just coast down over 19 miles of windy road.
