The Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture

Tucked away in the middle of nowhere, an hour outside of Fresno, the Clarks own a large orchard. And as collectors of Japanese art their collection became large enough to make it worth erecting a centre for art. Next to their house. Which is a Japanese manor complete with meticulous Japanese garden. It's... very special. If you're ever at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and looking at the Japanese art: most of that was donated by the Clarks.

Bonsai

There was a large bonsai exhibit outside of the Clark Center. However, most turned out as rather drab photographs of green on green, and rather than try to fix them, I'll just tell you to visit the Clark Center when you're in the neighbourhood.

The walkway is not flagstone.

It pleases the geometric eye.

A meticulous garden

The private residence is encircled by a proper Japanese garden.

The Clark private residence

Walking in for more photographs would been quite a bit more than merely rude.

Deity? Bodhisattva? Warrior?

I honestly don't know.

The tale of Genji

A rather unusual piece based on the tale of Genji, when the carts have broken down, en-route.

More special than you might think

This is bamboo, not wire work; "Prominence" by Honda Shouryuu (b1951), 2012.

This piece is a promised gift from the Clarks to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Scroll

Unfortunately I did not get the namepiece for this scroll

The lion dance

The original lion dance did not involve lots of men. Or men, at all. It was performed by geisha.

A most unusual Fujisan

Verily, it is as though you have slimmed, Fujisan.

Depth of Vase

The layering on this vase was quite lovely. The photograph, not so much, but I didn't want to throw it away for the subject matter.

Also, this looks like an exercising Japanese figurine, without the head.
