The Road To Monterey

We drove from the Clark Center on to Monterey, via the PInnacles National Park, taking "airport road" which took is past the east side of the Pinnacles.

The road to monterey

For a while it's just flat with dusty farmland. Then, mountains start rolling into view

Beware of tipping lorries

It took a moment to realise that, yes, if that's the turn you take, that's the direction you'll tip in.

Airport highway

It's a fairly long stretch of "this", but there's no one else on the road, which makes it a nice drive

So bubbly!

Foothills... and in the distance, mountain.

The California State Bird

The California quail. And not just one, but a couple. And not just a couple, an male/female couple. That's a checkmark.

The photo's a bit shitty, but that's because it's a fairly extreme crop: we had no idea what kind of bird we were looking at, and we didn't even see the female at first.

Chibibibis present: the Pinnacles

Pinnacles national park is basically "a road up, then impassible mountain, then a road down" so you can't actually drive through it: you either approach from the east, or you approach from the west, and to get to the other side is a roughly 50 mile circle-back =)

The chibibis like nature

Here they are posing for the camera at the Pinnacles National Park

A chibibi hole?

The chibibibis wonder who lives here. They didn't find out before we left =(

And then: green

Once you pass the Pinnacles, Airport Road becomes decidedly more green.

There is so much green after the Pinnacles that there's enough for livestock to graze on

Approaching Monterey

It was getting early evening, and the sky became lovely shades of orange and blue

The pacific rim?

As if it was aware of pop-culture, the sky threw in a cloud-based Kaijuu rendition as we reached the Pacific coast. We would soon be learning all about the waters these fictional creatures would have come from.
